Installing solar panels and putting clean energy back on the grid is a highly impactful way to reduce your usage of fossil fuels at home. If you have rooftop solar, your home is likely still connected to the electrical grid and can draw from and contribute to the power grid throughout the day.

Energy Shift, a feature of Nest Renew, can help extend the positive impact you're making with rooftop solar by enabling your compatible Nest thermostat to prioritize usage during times when your grid is less clean. This can result in more excess solar generation being fed back onto the grid, helping reduce your community's reliance on fossil fuel electricity sources.

Many users with rooftop solar are also often on a 'Time of Use' (TOU) tariff through their utility provider. By providing your TOU tariff on the Nest Renew website, Energy Shift can help automatically adjust your thermostat to prioritize use of energy when it is cheaper.1

Nest Renew: Customers with compatible Nest thermostats can join for free.2 Nest Renew helps you understand when energy coming into your home is cleaner, and when it's not so clean, so you can decide to use electricity at a more informed time. Nest Renew also includes Energy Shift, a feature that helps you automatically prioritize usage of cleaner or less expensive energy.1 You'll also get access to monthly challenges, energy saving tips, and the ability to extend your positive impact by directing Nest Renew funds to nonprofit partners through the Energy Impact Program.

Nest Renew Premium: Nest Renew Premium costs $10 a month. You'll get access to everything included with Nest Renew plus additional features, such as Clean Energy Match, that can match the fossil fuel electricity used in your home with enough clean energy to cover the average U.S. household. This is done with purchases of renewable energy credits from U.S. wind and solar.6

Yes, Nest Renew requires a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, or the newest Nest Thermostat (sold separately), connected to a Google account. If you're unsure which Nest thermostat you have, click here to learn more.

No, Nest Renew does not replace your utility company. It is a service from Google that complements the electric service you receive from your local utility. Nest Renew does not provide you with energy, require you to switch utility providers, or make changes to your electric or gas service.

If your utility company offers a clean energy option, you should consider signing up for it. Only your utility company can provide you with the electricity that powers your home. Some of them are even working to make sure that the clean energy they provide customers is produced within their region. Nest Renew is complementary and not an alternative to clean energy options from your utility.

Nest Renew will be purchasing RECs from wind and solar plants in the United States. The majority of these RECs will come from our flagship project Bethel Wind in Castro County, TX, with the remainder coming from US solar. We've also entered an agreement to purchase RECs from Roseland Solar, a project under development in Falls County, TX, which is expected to begin providing RECs for Clean Energy Match in 2023 for a three-year term. Learn more about our REC purchases.

Customers can track their progress and impact in Nest Renew's new monthly impact emails or check any time at nestrenew.google.com, which can be easily accessed from settings in either the Nest or Google Home apps.
