Frequently asked questions.
Yes, Nest Renew requires a 3rd generation Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat E, or the newest Nest Thermostat (sold separately), connected to a Google account. If you're unsure which Nest thermostat you have, click here to learn more.
Customers can track their progress and impact in Nest Renew's new monthly impact emails or check any time at nestrenew.google.com, which can be easily accessed from settings in either the Nest or Google Home apps.
No, Nest Renew does not replace your utility company. It is a service from Google that complements the electric service you receive from your local utility. Nest Renew does not provide you with energy, require you to switch utility providers, or make changes to your electric or gas service.
If your utility company offers a clean energy option, you should consider signing up for it. Only your utility company can provide you with the electricity that powers your home. Some of them are even working to make sure that the clean energy they provide customers is produced within their region. Nest Renew is complementary and not an alternative to clean energy options from your utility.
Installing solar panels and putting clean energy back on the grid is a highly impactful way to reduce your usage of fossil fuels at home. If you have rooftop solar, your home is likely still connected to the electrical grid and can draw from and contribute to the power grid throughout the day.
Energy Shift, a feature of Nest Renew, can help extend the positive impact you're making with rooftop solar by enabling your compatible Nest thermostat to prioritize usage during times when your grid is less clean. This can result in more excess solar generation being fed back onto the grid, helping reduce your community's reliance on fossil fuel electricity sources.
Many users with rooftop solar are also often on a 'Time of Use' (TOU) tariff through their utility provider. By providing your TOU tariff on the Nest Renew website, Energy Shift can help automatically adjust your thermostat to prioritize use of energy when it is cheaper.2
